The Internet

How much information is in circulation on the internet (in gigabytes)?

Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, the world’s largest index of the Internet, estimated the size at roughly 5 million terabytes of data. That’s over 5 billion gigabytes of data.
Internet data heads for 500bn gigabytes, at 487bn gigabytes (2009)
Digital Universe report in 2007, reckoned the world's total digital content was 161bn gigabytes. About 70% of the information is created by individuals and includes phone calls, emails, photos, online banking transactions or postings on social networking sites, including Twitter. The amount of information that must be retained to comply with rules and regulations is expected to grow from 25% of the digital universe last year to 35% in 2012.

With the internet becoming so popular and people having more of a responsibility i.e people changing information on Wikipedia, some information may not be accurate or up to date, therefore providing false info and therefore the internet changing the nature of information.

Communication

I think that internet has changed the way we communicate as applications such as ‘Skype’ has allowed users to communicate more efficiently across the world as users can communicate via webcam. Also the internet has allowed people to find and communicate with old friends from the past with sites such as ‘facebook’.

Community

"The Internet stole my body, now a lifeless form hunched in front of a glowing screen. My senses dulled as my greedy mind became one with the global brain we call the Internet.”
“The Internet has changed my thinking about my ability to reach out to people, and about one’s ability to build communities and to influence incremental change.”

I think that the internet has changed communities, especially the younger generation as internet has opened new doors for the young, it has given many opportunities for people. However possibly effecting them negatively as some people may be glued to the internet, causing them to lose their social skills due to the unhealthy amount of internet usage .

Online Safety

"Children, especially adolescents, are sometimes interested in and curious about sexuality and sexually explicit material. They may be moving away from the total control of parents and seeking to establish new relationships outside their family." - FBI, A Parent's Guide to Internet Safety

I think that the internet has changed online safety, as with more and more businesses going online it would mean that the internet would need to be safe and secure for people to input their bank details, also online safety has changed as there has been a decrease within bullying on social media platforms.

Copyright

"Today's generation of youth have got used to downloading files and getting things instantly. They expect a great deal of information for free, making it hard for marketers to promote pricey products online"

I think that the internet has allowed millions of people to illegally download films and music, therefore being a factor contributing to the illegal activity of downloading and breaching copyright, however recently broadband providers such as ‘virgin’ and ;BskyB’ have banned certain sites such as pirate bay, therefore reducing copyright issues.

Culture

"Thanks to the Internet, people can directly choose what to promote and share, and therefore what becomes culture"

I think that the internet has allowed people to understand different cultures, as people can easily research different cultures, therefore changing culture as people can understand more about different cultures

Business

I think that the internet has changed the way businesses operate as it has opened up many doors for businesses as it has opened up the e-commerce market, where businesses sell products via the internet, examples being ‘eBay’ and ‘Amazon’ the dominant e-commerce market leaders.
